Good evening!

This past Saturday, I got to spend the day on my own with no responsibilities. With my camera in hand, and I headed out to Turner, Oregon to spend some time down at The yearly Barn House Show! I like to try and get out there every year, get inspired, and see if I can find any treasures to take home with me.

Your Inner Child

A little bit about my chosen piece for the topic “Your Inner Child”. I actually thought this would be a lot easier to do, and I had done a few pieces, but nothing really made me happy. What I ended up doing was thinking about me when I was little, and I remember LOVING to draw rainbows! EVERY ONE of my pictures had to have a rainbow in it, so that is what I decided to paint today as a reminder to myself that my inner child is still in here! πŸ˜‰

Tutorial Tuesday: Convert a Book Into an Art Journal

Good evening!

Welcome to my very first ever tutorial Tuesday!!

YEAH!! WHOO!! HOOOO!!!! APPLAUSE!!!!Β πŸ˜‰

If you saw yesterday’s post, you would have seen that I am in the habit of writing Morning Pages every morning. I do those Morning Pages in a leather bound book, that has grid-lined paper inside of it. I like the fact that it is not just regular boring lines, in case I want to doodle or draw in my journal, I feel like the grid-lines support me in thinking outside of the box.

However, I am also a big fan of art journals, and today I want to show you how to convert any regular book into an easy and inexpensive art journal of your very own.

What you will need:

  • A book – I have found that hard covers hold up the best

TT - Book to Journal 1

  • Paper tape – this could be any kind, but what I enjoy using is the paper tape that you find in the first aid section of most any pharmacy
Paper tape found in first aid section of pharmacy

  • Scissors (optional)
  • White gesso

TT - Book to Journal 3

  • A wide paint brush to use with the gesso

To convert your book into an art journal:

The first thing you will have to do is to create room in your art journal so that all of the fun elements that you might want to use to decorate your art pages, such as decorative papers, buttons, beads, lace, fabric, broken jewelry, pictures,Β  etc,Β  have space to go.

To do this, count the first three pages of the book, then count the next three pages of the book. Tear out the second set of 3 pages. Otherwise leave in pages 1, 2, and 3, and carefully tear out pages 4, 5, and 6. You will want to tear the pages out as closely, and as carefully to the spine as you can get, but rememberΒ  perfection is not necessary.

Count three pages, to skip.

Count three pages, to skip.

Tear out the next 3 pages.

Tear out the next 3 pages.

You will keep repeating this step over and over again until every other set of three pages have been removed.

Once you have torn out every other set of three pages, you will then want to reinforce the remaining sets of 3 pages that you have left.

To do this, you will go back to the beginning of your book, and gather the first set of three pages. Using your paper tape, you will want to either tear, or cut a piece of tape that measures the width of your page.

Once you have the correct length of tape, carefully lay it across the bottom edge of the book, with half the tape hanging off of the edge

Cover bottom of page, with tape letting 1/2 of the tape hang over the edge

Cover bottom edge of page, with tape letting 1/2 of the tape hang over the edge

Once that has been smoothed into place, turn your set of three pages (treating as if they are now one page, because they essentially will be), and then fold the overhang of tape up and over the back side of your new page.

Turn 3-page set, and fold up the remaining tape to create one new page out of your original three pages.

Turn 3-page set, and fold up the remaining tape to create one new page out of your original three pages.

Do this to all three sides of your new page: bottom, top, and side.

Do this to the bottom edge, the top edge, and the side edge of your new page.

Do this to the bottom edge, the top edge, and the side edge of your new page.

Each set of three individual pages will now become one thick page per taped bundle.Β  This reinforces your pages, and makes them sturdier for any kind of media or technique that you might want to use to decorate your journal pages with.

Repeat these taping steps for all of your sets of three pages.

Once you have your pages reinforced, you are now ready to prep your pages for arting on!Β  WHEW!!! πŸ˜‰

To do this, you will want to use your paint brush and apply a thin layer or two over each page of your new art journal.

Apply a thin coat or two of gesso to each page and let thoroughly dry, so your pages don't stick together. As you can see I don't mind some words showing through.

If you are impatient like me, you may want to use a hair dryer, or a embossing heat gun to speed up the drying process. Please note, if you do use an embossing heat gun to dry your pages (like I do) make sure not to leave the gun pointing at one spot for too long, you do not want to accidentally burn your gesso. Not fun, and kinda smelly!!

Once your pages are gesso’ed you are ready to get arting and customizing your new art journal in any way you would like!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me in the comments section of this post! I am always happy to help!

Keep an eye out for more tutorials in the future, including many ideas and techniques on how you can decorate your new art journal! I can’t wait!

A Flurry of Activity!

Good evening!

This evening has been a FLURRY of activity!! My sweetie and I are frantically getting everything ready to go down to Roseburg for the weekend. My sisters and I have rented two booths down at the Douglas County Christmas Fair, and we are going to be selling all sorts of hand made goodies! I will make sure to take plenty of pictures all weekend of everything and anything! Our good friend, Don is going to be coming over and babysitting our two little girls – thanks, Don!!! So, I know they will be in good hands!

We still have some more housekeeping to do before we go, and I need to make sure we get EVERYTHING packed into the minivan, because I am leaving work at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon to head out, and we are leaving straight from there.

I am not exactly sure what to expect from this Christmas bazaar, but I am excited to be getting to spend some time with my sissies, and to be able to sell some of my hand made bead and wire jewelry. It has been sitting in the house, some of it for up to five years, I have got to sell it, and make room for new creativity!

Back in 2007, I had opened my own jewelry business, and I did pretty well at making a nice selection of treasures, but because of some health problems that my sweetie was having, I decided that I needed to focus my attention on getting him better, so I put all of my jewelry-making supplies away. I get a little sad whenever I see them now, because I really do enjoy making jewelry, but really haven’t given myself permission to get back into making my little baubles! I think that after this weekend, that is going to really change! I would love to see myself start making jewelry again, with a focus on soldering, mini collages, ephemera, personalized memorabilia, and inspirational and sassy thoughts! πŸ™‚ That sounds like SO MUCH FUN!!! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, as much as I am enjoying my view of our lovely Christmas tree, and part of my book collection (see picture above), I have got to get going and get the rest of my to-do done for the evening, so I can go to bed before midnight!!

Have a FABULOUS evening!!! πŸ˜‰

Monday Night Update!

Good evening!!

I am VERY happy to announce that I am quietly taking the next two days off from work!!! My official plan is to spend some time hanging out in my best pjs, in a perfectly made bed, reading at least 1 YUMMY work ofΒ fiction, bundling up and going for a long walk through my neighborhood enjoying some fresh air, and taking care of myself as much as humanly possible within the next 2 days, before I jump right back in to a crazy work schedule!! LOL!

Anyway, I have finished decorating my journal, so I am going to post it this evening! I admit, it is a rather simple design, but I think this design fits me to a tee!!! πŸ˜‰

Now that that is finished, I am going to have to try to find another craft to make! Hmmm…memory box, crochet blanket, quilt??? Maybe a quilt – I think I have enough fabric around here!! Yeah – I will see what I can do about making that happen – matter of fact, I think this might be one of my things on my Life List!! I will have to check on that!!!

OH, Jason and I swung by GoodWill tonight, and I was able to pick up 3 new books, and a cute little basket for hauling around my goodies around the house!!! The books I picked up were:

Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg
What the Deaf-Mute Heard by G. D. Gearino
and Home A Memior of My Early Years by Julie Andrews

you know me, still a sucker for a good book! Always will be!!! πŸ˜‰

Have a FABULOUS evening! πŸ˜‰

My Ah-Ha Moment!

Good evening!!

My sister, Alex, just left to go home, after a VERY LOVELY visit this evening!! She has a way of helping me focus my thoughts, and making things that I’d previously thought would be near impossible seem strangely simple. How does she do that? AMAZING!!! You see, I had a really, REALLY bad stress headache at work today, and I IM’ed my husband and jokingly said that I should become an art teacher. Well, he laughed, I laughed, and I felt better enough to get back to work! When I stopped laughing, I kind of froze and said to myself, “Well, why not?”. My mom taught craft classes, I’ve taught craft classes,Β  maybe it is genetic!! I LOVE crafting, and I would LOVE to have a reason to do it, as often as possible!!! Anyway, I am not sure exactly how this is going to come to fruition but one way or another, with a little help from my friends, I am going to MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!! πŸ˜‰

Have a FABULOUS evening! πŸ˜‰

Getting Crafty!!

Good morning!

Have you heard??? TODAY IS FRIDAY!!! WHOO-HOO!!!

After work today, my sweetie is taking one of our nephews to his basketball game, and I will have the WHOLE EVENING TO GET CRAFTY!!!! YEAH!!!

I have caught the crafting bug, which right now could look like just about anything! Paper crafting, mixed media, crochet, sewing, decorating, collage, quilting, cross-stitching, painting, stamping, polymer clay, drawing, beading, wire jewelry, card making, glitter, glue, punches, fancy scissors, etc, etc, etc. The list can go on seemingly forever!!! I think I take after my mom, that way – she was the ‘Queen of Crafting’ “Hi Momma!!!” πŸ˜‰

I did want to share a pic of something that I crafted that is totally new to me. I made this for my sister, Alex, as a going away present, so she could write about her life’s journey during the next few months!!

I had so much fun making this, and I have always been a big believer, and lover, of journaling!!! So, I knew that this would be PERFECT for her!!! I hope she LOVES it!! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, as for today, I have a lot of work to do at the office, but it has been a VERY PRODUCTIVE week, even though it has been a little stressful, home life with my sweetie has been really AWESOME – he is being sooooo very patient and supportive during this crazy, busy work schedule, and I got to spend some time, twice, with my sis, Alex this week. So, all-in-all I am counting that as a GREAT week!!!

How has your week been?? I would love to hear about it in the comment section above!

Have a FABULOUS day!!! πŸ˜‰
