That’s More Like It!

Got home from work not too long ago, and I am happy to report that, TODAY WAS SOOO MUCH BETTER THAN YESTERDAY!!! WHOO!!! HOO!!!!!

Less stress!
Less yelling!
Less anxiety!
Less headache!
More work done!
More smiling!
More laughing!!

That makes me a very HAPPY GIRL this evening!!! My sweetie and I stopped off and picked up some made-to-order salads, which were quite delicious. Then we made a b-line for home so we could have our dinner, and get started with our evening!!!

I am going to do some more crafting on my journal this evening, and maybe do a little reading, although I am having some trouble getting into a new book. That is one of the dilemmas of having so many books – especially when almost half of them are yours because you inherited them. Their genres are TOTALLY different than what I am used to reading, which I know could be a REALLY GOOD thing, but I am having a hard time falling into a story.

Does anyone have any good books that they have read lately???  Talking about books, that reminds me – I have been talking with my sweetie about starting a book club, but I am not exactly sure how to go about finding book lovers like me! I had recruited one person, but now she is moving back to Arizona, *SNIFF*, so I am going to have to start over!! I LOVE reading, and I ESPECIALLY love reading books that have adventure, mystery, intrigue, some action, a lusty romance is always good, you know – kind of like one-stop-shopping!!

Some of my favorite reads are:

  • The Harry Potter Series
  • The Vampire Diaries Series
  • The Twilight Series
  • The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
  • Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe
  • The Mortal Instruments Series
  • The Percy Jackson Series

But, what I would REALLY LOVE to read with a book club is all of the Jane Austen books! Jane Austen has written some of THE BEST heroes and heroines EVER!! They are complex, tortured, and ABSOLUTELY LOVEABLE!!!! Has anyone ever started a book club before??? How do you go about doing it?? How do you find people to join you?? If anyone has any ideas, or if anyone is in the Salem area and would like to join me – THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! 😉

Anyway, I am off to go get get crafty for a little while before bed this evening! I am hoping to have a picture of my new journal to share with you by Friday!

Have a FABULOUS evening! 😉

Early Birds!

Well, I had some early bird family members join me a little before Christmas this evening. My little sister Jennifer, and her husband, Austin, came up from Roseburg to visit for the next 2 days, since they have to work both days before and after Christmas, and we were sure if we would get the opportunity to spend some time hanging out together!! They are taking a quick trip to Portland and will be back later this evening!

Jason is also out this evening, I am not sure what exactly he is doing, but if I were to really think about it, I would know that he is out getting his last minute Christmas shopping finished!!

SO, I am just taking a moment to enjoy the quiet evening here at the manse…er uhm…ok, so manse might be quite the overstatement, but you know!! Anyway, I have been browsing some books that my sis-in-law had stored in her trunk that she had ready for thrifting. I LOVE reading, but I am having some serious difficulties getting into a book right now. My mind seems to constantly be running – lack of focus! I want to find a good book that has some  romance, passion, camaraderie, hilarity, a tricky mystery, and some kind of ironic twist that ends with a happy ending!! Is that too much to ask???? LOL!! I know!!

Jason just got home – it looks like he has gotten enough baking supplies to do some serious damage to the kitchen I just got cleaned up from his last baking day!! I still love that man – that bakin’ fool o’ mine!!! 😉

Anyway, I am planning on hitting the hay early tonight, so off to get ready for bed I go!!

Have a FABULOUS evening! 🙂

Spots of a Different Color

I finished the book, “Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul”. There is one short story that I can’t seem to get out of my mind, so I thought I would share it with you:

Spots of a Different Color

“Honey, someone left a coat in your mother’s closet,” I called to my husband. The faux-leopard jacket was tucked in the back of the closet  against the wall, out-of-place among the dark coats and sweaters. I wondered who would hide clothes in my mother-in-law’s closet. We were there to get a winter coat for her because she was coming home from the hospital, a week after being rushed to the emergency room.

“Coat? What coat?” My husband looked up from sorting the mail. I took out the jacket, holding it up in the light for him to see. “Oh, that jacket. Mom bought it years ago, when I was a kid…you know, when they were fashionable. She and pop even argued about getting it.”

I thought of the woman I’d known for 30 years. She bought her house dresses and polyester pantsuits at Kmart of Sears, kept her grey hair tightly confined in a hair net and chose the smallest piece of meat on the dinner platter when it was passed around the table. I knew she wasn’t the kind of flamboyant type who would own a faux-leopard print jacket.

“I can’t imagine Mom wearing this, ” I said to him.

“I don’t think she ever wore it outside the house,” my husband answered.

Removing the jacket from its padded hanger, I carried it to her bed and laid it on the white chenille bedspread. It seemed to sprawl like an exotic animal. My hands brushed the thick, plush fur, and the spots changed luster as my fingers sank into the pile.

My husband stood over at the door. “I used to see Mom run her fingers over the fur, just like you are,” he said.

As I slid my arm into the sleeves, the jacket released a perfume of gardenias and dreams. It swung loose from my shoulders, its high collar brushing my cheeks, the faux fur soft as velvet. It belonged to a glamorous, bygone era, the days of Lana Turner and Joan Crawford, but not in the closet of the practical 83-year-old woman I knew.

“Why didn’t you tell me mom had a leopard jacket?” I whispered, but my husband had left the room to water the plants.

If I’d been asked to make a list of items my mother-in-law would never want in her life, that jacket would have been near the top. Yet finding it changed our relationship. It made me realize how little I knew about this woman’s hopes and dreams. We took it to the hospital for her to wear home. She blushed when she saw it, and turned even rosier at the gentle teasing of the staff.

In our last three years together, I bought her gifts of perfume, lotion and makeup instead of sensible underwear and slippers. We had a lunch date once a week, where she wore her jacket, and she began to curl her hair so it would be fluffy and glamorous for our date. We spent time looking at her photo album, and I finally began to see the young woman there, with the Cupid’s bow mouth.

Faux fur has come back into fashion. It appears in shop windows on the street. Every time I catch a glimpse of it, I’m reminded of my mother-in-law’s jacket, and that all of us have a secret self that needs to be encouraged and shared with those we love.

~ Grazina Smith

What secret self might you have hiding in the back of your closet? Is it a faux-fur jacket that you are too worried about what others will think of you to actually wear? Is it your good China that you only pull out once a year because it is only for special occasions?? Get out there, and as my sister-in-law says, “Let your freak flag fly!!” That is the spice of life and what makes us all unique, interesting, and WONDERFUL!!! This is advice that I can apply to myself!

Have a FABULOUS evening!

Monday’s Book Review!

As the self proclaimed “Queen of Christinaville” I was excited about stumbling across the book called “Queen of Your Own Life: The Grown-Ups Woman’s Guide to Claiming Happiness and Getting the Life You Deserve.” This small tome was written by Kathy Kinney (you may remember her as Mimi on the Drew Carey Show), and Cindy Ratlaff.

Now, I am no stranger to the world of “self-help” books, so the messages in this book are by no means revolutionary, however being a firm believer that mastery is achieved through repetition, this is a book that can be happily read knowing that these concepts will help you take charge of your life.

Sprinkled with personal stories, creative analogies, lots of motivating quotes, and a ton of laughter, this book presented this well-loved information in a fun and interesting way that kept me engaged every step of the way.

I would highly recommend getting your hands on this book to read and then pass along to one of your Ladies In Waiting (or your LIW, as the book calls these dear friends) to share the laughter. Better yet, purchase 2 copies, take your favorite lady in waiting (LIW), snag a comfy chair at your local coffee shop, kick off your shoes, and spend the afternoon giggling away on some queenly humor.

“Shared joy is double joy. Shared sorrow is half sorrow.”

– Swedish Proverb

I am an avid reader, and every Monday I will try and share a different book that I have read in the hopes that I might motivate someone to read something that they might not have read otherwise. All of my reviews will be solely based on my own opinion, and as always, I will be very happy to hear your thoughts in the comments section.

Have a FABULOUS evening!!
