Soul Book 2018 #18!

Good evening!

I am a little bit late in getting this post published, but better late than never!

Today I am very happy to be sharing my process video for an art journal spread that I have recently done in my 2018 Soul Book.

The inspiration for this spread was that I have a song that means a lot to me this year that I wanted to document and remember. That song is called Life Uncommon, which was written and performed by Jewel.

The words to Life Uncommon are:

Don’t worry mother
It’ll be alright
And don’t worry sister
Say your prayers and sleep tight
And it’ll be fine
Lover of mine
It’ll be just fine
(Chorus)
And lend your voices only
To sounds of freedom
No longer lend your strength
To that which you wish
To be free from
Fill your lives
With love and bravery
And you shall lead
A life uncommon
I’ve heard your anguish
I’ve heard your hearts cry out
We are tired, we are weary
But we aren’t worn out
Set down your chains
Until only faith remains
Set down your chains
(Chorus)
There are plenty of people
Who pray for peace
But if praying were enough
It would’ve come to be
Let your words enslave no one
And the heavens will hush themselves
To hear our voices ring our clear
With sounds of freedom
Sounds of freedom
Come on you unbelievers
Move out of the way
There is a new army coming
And we are armed with faith
To live, we must give
To live
(Chorus X3)
A life uncommon

Isn’t that just lovely? It seriously is one of my faves and has been floating around in my head for months! I just knew that I wanted to put the lyrics to this song in my Soul Book, but thought I would first decorate a background and just paste the music on top of the background.

Well, I gave myself permission to put some music on and just play, and before I knew it I was on a creative-mojo-filled-roll!! I love when that happens!! Anyway, before I knew it there was no way I was going to let myself cover up the abstract painting I was doing. The colors were different than anything else I would have ever put together, but I L-O-V-E-D it!!! So, I had to come up with some kind of solution as to where I was going to put my song lyrics. The simple solution popped into my mind, and that was to create a pocket out of the 2nd page of my spread and the following blank page. That combined with some double-sided sticky tape, and viola!! It worked beautifully!!

I ended up mounting the song, that I had printed onto plain printer paper onto opposite sides of a nice piece of water color paper, and that gave the song some heft, and kind of turned it into a gigantic tag – perfect for the new pocket that I had created!

I finished by doing a bunch of doodling on the spread, as well as doing some journaling with a white pen. I did that part after the video because I thought for sure that I was done, but later, when I went back to look at my spread again with new eyes, I just knew what I wanted to say on this spread, and instead of doing a tip-in or anything, I decided to write it out!! I wrote from top to bottom on the right hand page, and then flipped the whole thing over so that the writing is upside down on the left hand side – I thought that was a fancy shmanzy way to do that, and I love they that it turned out.

The materials I used:

  • Dina Wakley heavy body acrylic paints: Ruby, Blackberry Violet, Ocean, and Tangerine
  • Liquitex heavy body acrylic paint: Titanium White
  • An old hotel key card (for scraping my paint in a thin layer on the background)
  • Dina Wakley paint brushes: 1 inch, a small round brush
  • UHU glue stick
  • a small Uni Posca Paint pen: Black
  • Double-sided construction tape (a gift from my sweetie)
  • My Fiskars precision paper cutter
  • Scissors
  • StazOn permanent ink pad: Jet Black
  • Date stamp
  • Bic black doodling pen
  • Construction pencil from Lowes
  • Uni-ball Signo Broad: white
  • Small white paper plate for my paint palette
  • Song printed on 2 sheets of regular white printer paper
  • 1 sheet of thick watercolor paper

I hope you enjoyed watching this process, and more importantly, I hope that you are inspired to  to maybe do a similar kind of art journal spread in your own Soul Book!

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know down in the comments section, I am always happy to be of help! Also, please let me know if you do decide to do a spread like this, what song would you choose to use?

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Now it is your turn to get creating!

Here is to having some fun!

Art Journal Thursday #24!

It is better late than never…

I am happy to announce that my Art Journal Thursday video has been posted out on YouTube!

The supplies I used this week were:

  • White gesso
  • Art Advantage Acrylic Paint: Permanent Green Light, Phthalo Turquoise, Cerulean Blue
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencils: Halves, and Spinners
  • Dylusions 5×8 Stencil: Circles Small
  • Black Stabilo Pencil
  • Finalize Bottle filled with white acrylic paint
  • Punchinella
  • M. Graham & Co Titanium White Acrylic Paint

DSC06872This week’s page is actually really simple, but I love the way that it turned out.

DSC06875I was really excited to get started on this week’s art journal spread because this was the week that I got to start in my crisp, clean, new art journal!

DSC06881My new art journal is a Strathmore 400 series, 8.5×11 watercolor paper journal, and I am just LOVING the size! It is so much more manageable than the art journal I just finished, which was a Strathmore 500 series 11×17, I think!

DSC06880

The pages of this journal aren’t quite as smooth as the last journal, but I think I will be able to enjoy myself so much more, now that I don’t have the pressure of trying to figure out to cover such a large spread! So YEAH FOR THAT!! 😉DSC06883

I am LOVING all of the textures that this background technique has created!DSC06889

I also really LOVE the colors that I have chosen for this page – ACTUALLY, it was my hubby who chose blue and green – his favorite colors!! Thank you, Sweetie! 😉DSC06897

I also am really enjoying adding art journaling to my spreads!! It has kind of become a game to see if I can figure out a new way to journal on my page each week! I really like the circular journaling though…might be my new fave! 🙂DSC06887

So, even though this page was really simple to do, and actually came together rather quickly, I am really very happy with how it turned out!  I think that this new journal is off to a great start!! I can’t wait to see what comes out next!!!DSC06894

What do you think? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!! 🙂

Also, if you have any ideas, or techniques that you might like to see me try in one of my future layouts, please let me know in the comment section and I will see what I can do to be accommodating! Also, I really do LOVE answering any questions you may have about art journaling, mixed-media, or anything you might have seen me do here! Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, and I will try and get back to you in a timely manner!!

Until next time!

Here is to a BEAUTIFUL CREATIVE life! 🙂

Art Journal Thursday #23!

I am happy to announce that my Art Journal Thursday #23 video has been posted out on YouTube!

This week the materials I used were:

  • White gesso
  • Tissue paper – two different patterns, the teal and white chevron patterned tissue paper was from Paper Source
  • Gel medium
  • Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body Acrylic Paints: Lime, Magenta, Tangerine, Night
  • Apple Barrel Craft Paint: White
  • Balzer Designs Stencil: 12X12 Stones Divided
  • Balzer Designs Stencil: 6X6 Mini Fifties Clock
  • Dylusions Stencil: 9X12 Flossie
  • Fineline Bottle with White Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Distress Ink Reinker: Festive Berries
  • Uni-Ball Signo Broad White Pen
  • Pilot Permaball Black Pen
  • #2 Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Uhu Glue Stick

DSC06851Well, what can I say about my Art Journal Thursday this week? I was so excited to be finishing up with this particular art journal that I really had no idea where to begin. So, maybe that is where I will start in my explanation for this week’s art journal – my art journal. The journal that I have been using is a Strathmore 500 Series, Mixed Media Paper Journal, which I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this brand, and the paper is SUPER tough, and is so CREAMY to work on…the problem that I have been having is the S.I.Z.E!! I saw that Donna Downey (who I LOVE, by the way!!!) was using this size, 11×14 sized pages, I thought, “I CAN DO THAT!!!” Well, when you are a newbie art journaler, which I am, and you work full time at a non-artsy kind of job, which I do, and when you have committed to yourself to do a two page art journal spread EVERY SINGLE week, and NOT ONLY that, but to record your process and post out on YouTube EVERY SINGLE WEEK, which I SOOO INSANELY DID – you quickly come to the realization that THIS IS A LOT!!! 😉 You DO NOT want to make things harder for yourself by buying the LARGEST art journal that you can possibly find!! What was I thinking???

DSC06857So, the next art journal, which I will start using in next week’s art journal video, is a MUCH more manageable 8.5 x 11 size!! I CAN’T WAIT!!!

DSC06848Anyway, back to this week’s spread! When I started I didn’t really have a plan, I usually don’t, but I knew that I wanted to use this AWESOME new tissue paper that I had found a Paper Source!

DSC06860Once I got my colors, patterns, and textures started it was very VERY tricky for me to reign it in, but I was having some good fun playing, and staying in my head!!

DSC06854I decided that I wanted to use all of that pattern as an element that would pop off of the page by covering a lot of it with a dark color, and a silhouette stencil. Once I had done that I wasn’t really sure where to go from there, but I had some deep, stop-and-listen-to-your-soul-cuz-she’s-a-speakin’ kind of thoughts going on, so I decided to grab my Fineline bottle with some white acrylic paint, and decided to journal some of those thoughts out onto my page.

“She knew that she was going to have to get out of her own way if she were ever going to make her dreams come true. No one was going to do the hard work for her. She knew it was going to have to be all up to her!”

DSC06869Yeah, I am not sure where that came from, because it came from someplace deep, deep down, and even as I write it now, I KNOW that it is the TRUTH that I am living with right now!

I am not sure if I really love the design of this finished spread – when I look closely it is kind of a bit of train wreck, and I know it definitely had parts of it that I would do differently (for example, the Distress Ink Festive Berries never did really dry – even after 48 hours!! UGH!!! I should’ve used my Dylusions spray ink with a dropper!), if I were to do it again, but for some reason that this spread really resonated with me, so my final thought is that I really LOVE it!!

What do you think? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!! 🙂

Also, if you have any ideas, or techniques that you might like to see me try in one of my future layouts, please let me know in the comment section and I will see what I can do to be accommodating! Art Journal Thursday #22

Good morning!

I am very happy to announce that my Art Journal Thursday video #21 is up on YouTube!

The supplies I used this week were:

  • Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body Acrylic Paints: Tangerine, Magenta, Lime
  • Tim Holtz Distress Ink Re-inker: Peeled Paint
  • Alesa Baker Designs Wood Mounted Stamp: French Handwriting
  • Art Impressions Wood Mounted Rubber Stamp: Squiggly line (that’s what I am calling it)
  • Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint: White
  • Paper Towel that had mopped up various Dylusions sprays
  • Scissors
  • Uhu Glue Stick
  • Fineline Applicator filled with White Acrylic Paint
  • Black Pilot Multiball Pen – my new FAVE doodling pen!!!

DSC06820If you watched this week’s video, you already know that I really didn’t have any kind of plan when I went into this week’s art journal spread! In all honesty, I just knew that I had to get an art journal video done for this week, but I was so tired from a week of not really taking very good care of myself sleep-wise, compounded with losing another hour of sleep due to daylight savings time, I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to get this one done!

DSC06825I decided to help get me into the arting mood that I would listen to some loud happy music, and it worked! Before I knew what hit me, I had found my stride, and was once again a very VERY happy girl! 😉

DSC06827I had a lot of fun this week just putting down colors, doodling, and just really letting myself play! I find that when I revert back to my inner, kindergarten Chrissie, that I have a tendency to be really happy with my art journal pages!

DSC06836This week was no different!!! As soon as I released my inner me, I found myself having fun, and pulling from a pile that I haven’t really played with in a while – and that was my stash of used paper towels, which may not seem like something to be proud of, but trust me, I am!!! I just LOVE finding new ways to use treasures from my stash!!

DSC06837Anyway, I really hope you enjoyed watching this week’s video! I really hope that these weekly videos can, in some way, inspire you to try something new in your own art journals – that would be so AMAZING to me!!! 😉

DSC06842DSC06846What do you think of this week’s spread? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!! 🙂

Art Journal Thursday #19

Good morning! I am happy to announce that my Art Journal Thursday Video #19 has been uploaded out on YouTube! 🙂

The materials I used this week are:

  • White Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Mixed Media Acrylic Paints: Lime, Turquoise, Sky, Magenta, Lapis, White
  • Baby wipes
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil: Essentials
  • Ceramcoat Acrylic Craft Paints: Green, OJ
  • Folk Art Acrylic Paint: Medium Yellow
  • Finalize bottle filled with white acrylic paint
  • Uhu Glue Stick
  • Uniball Signo Broad White Pen
  • Black Pilot Permaball Pen
  • Ranger Archival Ink Pad

DSC06743This weeks video is rather short and sweet. That is mainly because I lost part of my video footage in the beginning…oops, sorry about that! In case you missed how I got this page started out, I coated my spread with white gesso by using a palette knife to scrape white gesso all over my spread and letting that dry completely. I then used three of Dina Wakley Media Paints to add color to my page, and before those colors dried, I used a stencil and baby wipe to pull some of the color up through the stencil. As I added another color, I made sure to overlap some of the previously stenciled areas to incorporate all of the colors together, and then continued with my stencil technique. I kept doing this until my spread was color!

DSC06745That is why my video today begins!

DSC06749I really like the way this spread turned out, at one point I wasn’t exactly sure where I was going with it! 🙂 But as always, it usually seems to turn out exactly as it is supposed to, and I really love it! 🙂

Art Journal Thursday #15

I am happy to announce that my latest Art Journal Thursday post is now up on YouTube!

The supplies I used this week were:

  • Golden’s Fluid Acrylic Paint: Teal
  • Delat Ceramcoat Acrylic Craft Paint: Pop Pink, OJ
  • Decorated deli paper, and cardstock
  • Golden’s Matte Light Gel Medium
  • Golden’s Matte Medium Bodied Gel Medium
  • Palette Knife
  • Balzer Designs Stencil: Blazonry
  • M Graham & Co Full Bodied Acrylic Paint: White Titanium

  • 3 miscellaneous circle stamps – I don’t know brand or name
  • Stabilo Black Pencil
  • Paint Brush
  • Black Pilot Multiball Pen
  • Uhu Glue Stick
  • Dylusions Ink Spray: Calypso Teal

DSC06554If you watched today’s video, you will already know that I did not have any kind of plan for today’s layout. I just knew that I had three or four colors in mind when I first started and I wanted to just let the page take me where it wanted to go!

DSC06556I also knew that I had some leftover deli paper and cardstock pages that I had decorated using a Gelli plate that I wanted to see if I could somehow incorporate into today’s spread.

DSC06563After getting all of my colors on my layout the way that made me happy, I then decided I wanted to use one of my previously unused stencils, to overlay all of the bright color with some white – to help tone it down!

DSC06559Then I created black marks with my Stabilo pencil, and black doodling pen, and I must admit this page was turning out to be a very happy spread!!

DSC06575I know that this week’s sentiment is very close to the sentiment from a few weeks ago, but this message just kept popping up in my head over and over, so I just went with it, and put it down! I am so glad that I did! 😉

DSC06574

I am just loving how bright and colorful this spread is!DSC06569

DSC06565

DSC06571Yep, it’s official – this spread might be my favorite to date! 😉

Teaching Mixed Media Techniques: Eclectic Backgrounds Class

Good evening!

I hope you all had an excellent weekend! My weekend is Sunday and Monday, so I am just now coming to the end of my weekend, and it has been pretty relaxing!

Before my weekend ends completely, and I get back into the hubbub that has been my filled-to-the-brim weeks, I wanted to share with you how my mixed-media art class, Eclectic Backgrounds, went this past Saturday!

DSC06459I was very excited about this class! This was my first, for pay, class!! I was also very nervous because I knew it was going to be a small class, which actually turned out to be such a blessing!! My first students were Sharon and Lynette – they were so MUCH FUN to have some play time with!!

DSC06456Because I was so nervous, I was planned to the ‘T’, however, I have a confession to make…I thought the class was supposed to be 3 hours long, and it turned out I had only scheduled it for 2, which meant we had A LOT to cover in a VERY SHORT amount of time!!DSC06447 Thankfully we not only got it all done in time, we all really had a GREAT time!! That is what I was hoping for most of all! 😉DSC06445We learned and practiced 6 different mixed media art background techniques! We even had enough time to get all 6 of our samples turned into handmade journals that we can take with us and play with when we got home!DSC06455I made sure to bring some of my art journals and some of my artwork to show how the backgrounds we had created could be added on to make completed art work either in art journal or art canvas form!
DSC06451 These are some of my whimsical faces AKA “Long Neck Girls”, I am teaching a class on this technique in February and March of this year!DSC06450I will be teaching a repeat of this Eclectic Background class, on January 21st, from 1-3 PM, at Runaway Art & Craft Studio here in Salem, Oregon. So, if you missed out on this first class, and would like to join us for the next one, please either leave a comment in this blog post below, or e-mail me at beautiful.creatives@yahoo.com to get more information!

Thank you to Sharon and Lynette for being so AWESOME! and for Kelsey at Runaway Art & Craft Studio for cheerleading me on so well, while also taking pics for us!!! This place is really becoming my home away from home!! 😉

As for this week, I am teaching another later this week for a private party! This time I will be teaching a gaggle of teenage girls, which I am sure will be a LOT of fun! I will make sure to share pictures from that fun evening too! 😉

Until then! 😉

Here is to a BEAUTIFUL Creative week! 😉

Weekly Art Journal #11

Good morning!

I am very happy to announce that my Weekly Art Journal #11 video has posted out on YouTube!

The supplies I used on this week’s layout is as follows:

  • #2 pencil
  • A couple of different kinds of erasers
  • Tim Holtz Idea-Ology Tissue Paper – Postale
  • Uhu Glue Stick
  • DecoArt Acrylic Craft Paint: Tropical Blue (DCA102)
  • Premier Prismacolor Pencils: Sepia (948), Burnt Ochre (943), Dark Brown (946), Peach (939), Beige (997), Yellow Ochre (942), White (938), Greyed Lavender (1026), Blush Pink (928), Lavender (934), Process Red (994)
  • Black Fude Ball 1.5
  • Black Uniball Signo 207 pen
  • Ranger Distress Stains: Frayed Burlap, Walnut Stain, Black Soot
  • A scrap of map paper
  • Faber Castell Gelato: Dark Green
  • Black Ranger Archival Ink Pad
  • Recollections Chevron Wood Mounted Stamp
  • Plastic doily stencil
  • Ranger Texture Paste
  • Palette Knife
  • Sentiment printed out on regular printer paper
  • Brown Stabilo All Pencil
  • Water Brush

Unlike most of my weekly journal pages, I started out with an idea on how I wanted this week’s spread to appear. I knew that I wanted to draw one of my cute long neck girls, I wanted to use the Ranger Postale tissue paper, I wanted to use my favorite Tropical Blue craft paint, and I knew that I wanted to use my new Ranger texture paste!

DSC06274So the hard part was just going to be drawing my long neck girl, in it’s entirety, in front of the camera, so I challenged myself to see if I could keep the camera going the entire time, and not cut away, like I had done the last time I drew one of my girls for Art Journal Thursday. And you know what??? I TOTALLY DID IT!!! WHOOT! WHOOT!!! 😉

DSC06281I was extremely proud of myself that I didn’t chicken out and cutaway, but because I didn’t, it made for a very, very, VERY LOOONG video!! EEK!! So although I thought that the drawing of my long neck girl would be the hardest part, the hardest part actually turned out to be editing my video down to less than 15 minutes! WHEW!! 😉

DSC06271That combined with doing the voiceover, which you may know I am extremely new to, this was probably my hardest video to date, but I must confess I really LOVE the way this spread turned out! 🙂

DSC06278During filming, I did have some issues while drawing my long neck girl! Eyes are always rather tricky for me, and this week I see that her left eye is too far left for my liking, so I will have to keep working on that! I also had some trouble getting her lips to look just right! I have recently changed how I draw lips, and I think it is not working for me. I had better keep looking for a whimsical lip shape that makes me happy! 🙂

Practice! Practice! Practice!

DSC06280As for the background, I really LOVE this one! 🙂 The tissue paper, the messy chevron stamping, and the texture paste used throughout the round doily stencil all came together better than I could have hoped for!!! I am just LOVING all of the yummy patterns and textures!! 🙂

DSC06276I also love that I snuck the word “Courage” onto my long neck girl’s neck! Courage is something that I am consciously working on using more of, so this will be a gentle reminder to myself!! 😉

DSC06287As for this week’s sentiment, as I have said in past posts, I usually have a tendency to do my art journal pages in silence so I can hear any messages my soul might be trying to tell me. This week was no different. I have some hard choices to make in the next few weeks as it pertains to work, and I realized, during this week’s art journal time, that I have a distinct vision in my head about what I want to see in my life. Where I am living, what I am doing for a vocation, etc, and I realize that I am the only one who can take the necessary steps to make that vision come to fruition!

Life is not about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself, and not only that, but it is up to me to get out there and start creating it!! No one is going to do it for me!! So this sentiment summed that up for me, perfectly!! 🙂

DSC06286So, what do you think? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this week’s art journal!

Here is to a BEAUTIFULLY CREATIVE week! 😉

A FABULOUS weekend with Dyan Reaveley!

Good afternoon!

This past weekend, I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to spend the entire weekend taking four, in-person, art journaling classes with one of my FAVORITE artists, Dyan Reaveley!!!

1

YEAH!!! WHOO!! HOO!!!

Meeting Dyan Saturday morning was literally like meeting a ROCK STAR!!!!

Her GORGEOUS bright red hair, her FABULOUS one-of-a-kind vintage-inspired dresses, her KICKY SASSY attitude, was less than two feet away from my AWESOME front row seat in class – ALL WEEKEND!!!!

One of Dyan's journal pages

One of Dyan’s journal pages

Yes, I was that sad, silly, groupie who pretty much just stared in awe, with my mouth agape like a lunatic, but even now, I can still hardly believe that not only did I get to meet her, I got to be involved in four of her AMAZINGLY CREATIVE classes!

1900375_771637496241815_9071693253165737264_o

Christy Woods, of Runaway Arts & Craft Studio, with Dyan Reaveley!

The classes…OH MY!!!

Well, wait, let me back up a little. The classes were held at my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE arts and craft store here in Salem, Runaway Art & Craft Studio! When Christy Wood, of Runaway, told me that Dyan Reavely would be coming to teach classes, I immediately told her to SIGN ME UP!!! I didn’t care what they cost, or what the topics were going to be, Dyan could have been teaching SQL computer programming, or the benefits of biofusion on our political economy and I would have been there, with bells on, in the front row, smiling like a crazy fool, just excited to be able to be in the room!!

16811_771637406241824_7087645531283269060_n

Also, for some unknown reason, all of the class samples that Dyan had sent ahead of her arrival never actually made it to the store, so none of the participants really knew what to expect for any of the classes, but I for one was pretty much just game for anything, and was feeling pretty excited just to be there – the making of anything awesome was just going to be an extra perk of the classes!!

2

So, on Saturday, I awoke early, got showered, dressed, ate my breakfast, and pretty much just paced around the house, full of anticipation, until it was FINALLY time to get to class!! After stopping off to get a GINORMOUS peppermint mocha (which was really just a distraction technique), I was FINALLY seated and ready for the first class to start, which was the Technique Tag Book class! The class lasted 2 1/2 hours, and Dyan basically took you through how to use her Dylsion spray inks, which I am now a firm believer are ESSENTIAL to my art journaling stash!! The class was vert fast paced, but not too fast that you couldn’t keep up with what was happening! The time flew, and before I realized it, the class was over and I had in my hot little hands my very first Tag book!! That I had created!!! Who knew????

4

3

We had about an hour to kill in between classes, and for me, and I am sure a lot of us who attended, meant SHOPPING!!! 😉 One of the cool things about taking any classes at Runaway is that Christy offers 15% off of any of your purchases that you make in the store on the day of your class – so you had BETTER BELIEVE I took ADVANTAGE of THAT!!! 😉

1476050_771637466241818_5754452214618053167_n

The next class was called Tags of Imagery, which is Dyan’s take on collage – bright, colorful, sassy, a little bit rock star, and LOADS OF FUN!! (Just like Dyan!!) Collage and I have never made great bed fellows, as I have always been too uptight/perfectionistic and collage has always seemed too loosey-goosey, and honestly has always just stressed me out! I am not sure if it was the way that Dyan taught us, or if it were the fact that she was the one teaching the class, but I REALLY LOVED this class!!! It made me want to go home and start ripping out images from every magazine I could get my hands on and start putting my little funky peeps together and plaster them on EVERYTHING!!! 😉 At the end of the three hours I walked away with three colorfully fun tags that I can honestly say are MAKING MY DAY when I look at them!!! 😉

A pile of everyone’s tags from class! COLORFUL!! 😉

There was even some news media that caught us in the act!! 🙂

The last class of the day was called Inky Watercolor Book which built upon everything we had already been learning throughout the day, but then Dyan gave us a chance to play with her Dylusions spray inks inside of the Tim Holtz water color brushes! I was really looking forward to this part of the class. She also taught us a book binding stitch – I can’t remember what she called it, but she has inspired me to get creating my own journals to share with friends and family!!! WAAAAAY easier than I ever expected! I LOVE THAT!!! 😉

I am not sure why, but I do not seem to have taken any pictures of this class, I think I was too heads down playing at this point, but I did find a pic of someone else’s project to share with you!

I went home, happy, and EXHAUSTED!!! Crashed in bed, as soon as my head hit the pillow, but unfortunately my brain was so excited to get back to class the next day that at 1:30 AM I was up and ready to go! I never did get to fall back to sleep that night, but that still didn’t seem to lesson my excitement any!!

Sunday morning, I was up and at em, ready and waiting in class, with another GIANORMOUS peppermint mocha to help get me through the day! That day was going to be filled with one 8 1/2 hour class, which was called Art Journaling Extravaganza! This class was all about putting it all together and creating a very personalized art journal using one of Dyan’s AWESOME Dylusion’s journal books, which just happens to have the thickest, richest, creamiest paper, formulated perfectly for using with Dyan’s Dylusions spray inks!

A VERY full class!!

A VERY full class!!

This class was hands down my FAVORITE!!! She gave you permission to rip out pages, make a mess, cut pages, get inky, have fun, be free, and try new things, over and over and over and over again, and not take yourself or the process too seriously!!! By the end of the day, we each had at least a half full journal started to collage, paint, write, and doodle in to our hearts content!!! I know that my Dylusions journal has become a very good friend that is going to be carried with me a LOT!!! 😉 Souds melodramatic, maybe, but take the class – I am sure you will feel the SAME WAY!!! 😉

Here are a few of my FAVORITE pages in Dylusions journal, just started, mind you, but well on their way!! 🙂

At the end of the day, we were all beat, but I wanted to stick around a little bit to chat with Dyan, and have her sign my journal, which she so graciously did – thank you, Dyan!! After some encouraging words from her, that literally left me speechless, I knew that this weekend was serendipitous, and I wasn’t meant to be anywhere else this weekend!!! 😉

Dyan checking out some of my artwork!! AIEEEEE!

My sweetie and I decided to stick around and help clean up, since the normally neat store looked like elephants had run through the place, which I guess we had – creatively FABULOUS elephants that is!! 😉 And if I didn’t think that my weekend could have gone any better, Christy invited my sweetie and I to join the Runaway team and Dyan for dinner…UHMMMMMM…YES PLEASE!!!! 😉 I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better weekend!! I mean what more could I possibly say??? I know I am gushing, but Dyan is really one of the most genuine, real, honest, no holds barred, women you could EVER meet, and at the same time she is generous, and creative, and beautiful, and WOW!!! SOOOO ENCOURAGING!!! 😉 Through her teaching of the classes and through our conversations throughout the weekend she really impresses upon you that you really can do seemingly hard things, if you break down into baby steps and you just do it piece by piece! That’s it – no need to make everything so freakin’ complicated!!

Ok, so I have rambled enough!! Don’t worry, Dyan, I will root you on from afar, (and hopefully get the opportunity to take many more classes from you in the future!) I promise no restraining orders will be necessary!!! 😉

Just one more thing, you should know, no one has paid me to say any of this, I am not affiliated with Dyan, or Ranger, or Runaway, although I am a SUPER HUGE fan of all three, all of the opinions expressed here are strictly my own and come from me!

If you have any questions, or comments, please feel free to leave them in the comments section here, and I will be happy to reply as soon as I am able!! 😉

Here is to a FABULOUS weekend past, and FABULOUS week to come!! 😉

Full confession…

I have been really under the weather this past week, struggling through a really bad cold! I think that the state of this spread shows that – at least to me! I really wasn’t feeling like arting at all, but I knew that I wanted to make sure that I kept this commitment, and I am learning that you may not always feel like doing something, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it just the same! So onward I pushed!

DSC05879

I was completely blank, so I decided to start by filling the spread with positive words! Not being a huge fan of my handwriting, I wanted to do something to hide my writing, and I thought that I could do this by covering the words with Gelatos. Gelatos are these really creamy, gel stick, acrylic paints, that when combined with water turn into a beautiful water color, but dry permanent, which I LOVE!

DSC05886

You may have also noticed that I was struggling with color selection, which is not something I usually struggle with, and let me just say that next week I am going to try and leave some white space on my spread! Anyway, as soon as I put down, what I thought was a dark blue, for my border, I wanted to quit this page! What a MESS!! However, I want to be able to show, not just to you, but to myself, that no matter what a mess you may run in to, there is always a way to work through it! So, I pushed through!

DSC05883

Then I decided to hand write my sentiment out onto card stock, which was fine, but I made a mistake. The pen I used to write the words, although says it is permanent, smudged as soon as I went to smudge the light blue Gelato that I had added to the words’ card stock! WHOOPSIE!!! Always know your tools!! 😉 I just rolled with it and did the same mistake on every word, so that way it might look like it was on purpose! I’m okay with it!

DSC05889

At this point, I just really, REALLY wanted to get this page done, and do it so that it at least looked like it belonged with my other art jouraling pages! I think I did end up doing just that! Even though, I can honestly admit that this is not my favorite spread, I am very happy that I did not give up on it! About halfway through I was ready to gesso the entire thing and start all over again, which I guess is a legitimate fix, but I really didn’t feel like having to start all over!

DSC05891

I also realized that my sentiment was absolutely perfect for this week! If I keep focusing on the good, and keep searching for it, I will find it! Even in this journal spread! So, I have come to the conclusion that even though my physical body is feeling under the weather, my subconscious is still as active as ever and trying to keep me on my creative path!! That puts this tired mind at ease!! It is the simple things in life that are the most important!!

DSC05881

If you have any ideas, or techniques that you might like to see me try in one of my future layouts, please let me know in the comment section and I will see what I can do to be accommodating! Also, I really do LOVE answering any questions you may have about art journaling, mixed-media, or anything you might have seen me do here! Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, and I will try and get back to you in a timely manner!!

Until next time!

Here is to a FABULOUS week! 🙂
