Soul Book Club #6!

Hello my Beautiful Creatives!

Where the heck does the time go???

I realize I have not posted here in quite a while, and I really don’t want to skip over anything, so I am recommitting to getting caught up. Slowly but surely!

Soul Book Club # 6 was posted, well, let’s just say a while ago! 🙂

When I was doing this week’s Soul Book Club video, I pretty much just gave myself permission to just play without much thought…you know, the same kind of free play that you might have done when you were an innocent kindergartner. This is my absolute favorite way to spend time in my Soul Book.

Free, uninhibited, playtime!!

My first spread I did today, was inspired by a picture that I had found on Pinterest. This image was a red splotchy background with the words Must Make Art. Not only is red my favorite color, this sentiment is my truth! I can’t seem to go a day without wanting to make art of any kind! and I mean EVERY-SINGLE-DAY!! 🙂

For this spread I thought I would use my 3×5 Gelly Plate, and basically use my Gelly Plate as kind of a stamp. I was also really excited about doing this spread because of the time card that I had tipped in to the middle of this spread. I knew it would 1. give me a bit of a challenge figuring out how to decorate it because it is a different kind of paper than the actual sketch book itself. and 2. I love the idea of having like a mini page in the middle of this spread.

I felt that I was having some trouble getting my groove on, I was having a lot of troubles dropping things – I do that when I let myself get a little bit too tired, and this spread, in my opinion really kind of turned out to be quite a mess, but I am glad that I did it! I also found that this spread helped me get warmed up, and inspired me to do another spread! 🙂

The second spread I did, I did not have a plan for that one either, but it is literally my favorite spread in my Soul Book now! 🙂

This was the first time I had ever used black gesso as my background layer, and it was also the very first time that I gave myself permission to use my good Golden’s acrylic paints, and man I am I soooo impressed!! When this spread was done, not only did I love it, it felt like oil cloth! As you might have noticed in the video, I just could NOT STOP PETTING IT!! LOL!!

Petting your art = LOVING IT!!! 😉

Anyway, bear with me, as I get myself caught up with my spreads here on my beautifulcreatives website, it will get done…I AM DETERMINED!!

Anyway, here is to a BEAUTIFUL Creative kind of night!

If you want a different life, you have to choose differently!

Soul Book Club #5!

Good morning, and OH MY!!

I have been doing such a bad job of keeping my blog in sync with my YouTube channel, so I thought I would take a few minutes over the next day or so to get myself caught up!

This week’s video is utilizing a technique that is one of my favorites. It consists of a stencil, some of your favorite acrylic paint colors, and a baby wipe! Super easy, but the end result looks a little bit magical – if I may say so myself!!

This week I show you how to easily get words down on your pages; the technique I am most proud of sharing is the homemade carbon paper transfer technique! Go check that out!

For this week’s thought, “She did it anyway.” Is something that is very near and dear to my heart! Being someone who lives with, what at times can be very severe anxiety issues, this is a sentiment that I should probably have tattooed to myself so that I never forget and am always reminded. Just because she felt *fill in the blank*, she did it anyway! I get so much more done in my life when I remember this truth for myself!

Here is to a She Did It Anyway kind of Day!!

Mixed Media with Chrissie B #4

mixed-media-with-chrissie-b-4-freeze-frameGood morning!

It has been a couple of days since I have posted this latest video out on YouTube, but I wanted to make sure that I get this post up for you!

This week, as I got ready to do this art journal spread, I did not have a plan in mind, which is not surprising, as I usually come to my art journal playtime without any kind of a concrete plan. The only thing I had in mind was that I wanted to use the color red.

dsc07775I once had an instructor teach that you should never use red in your art journaling unless you were using it in really tiny quantities, because it caused to much distraction. Well, red is my favorite color, but when she said that, I figured she was a better artist than myself, so she must know what she is talking about. So I completely took red out of my repertoire!! Seeing these words in print, is quite shocking to myself, because I never thought that I would let something like that stop me from using something that makes me so happy.

dsc07778Well, if you have been following my journey lately, you will already know that I am going through  a process of stripping off everything that is not authentically me, and how this translates in this art journal spread is that, since my favorite color is red, then I should be allowed to use it whenever I want to! That may seem like a very minor thing, in the big picture that makes up my life, but I am learning that being 100% completely free to be myself in everything, including my art should be a given! No matter how well intentioned that art instructor was, I need to remember to let my true colors fly and follow my true north, in whatever that means for me at the time! So, that is what I went into this play session thinking.

dsc07780As I was laying down my colors, I decided that I was going to use a magazine image on this spread. I do that a lot in my personal art journaling, but I am not sure I ever have in any of my video layouts, so that is what I thought I would do this time. Again, all about being authentic and showing my true colors. It also is proof to myself and to anyone else who might be wondering, how do I create beautiful art journal pages if I don’t know how to draw? Well this is  a perfectly acceptable way to do so!! I mean why not??? I just try to incorporate the image into one of the layers, instead of just plunking her down on the top of the spread, and I think she ends up looking pretty cool!!

dsc07772and do you see what color she is????

RED!!!

Yep, she’s red! I don’t feel like she is a distraction, and this spread makes me UBER happy, so I am going to call this one a win!!

Supplies I used in today’s art journal spread:

  • Old book pages
  • Golden’s Fluid Matte Medium
  • 1 1/2 inch hardware brush
  • DecoArt Crafters Acrylic Paint: Christmas Red, Squash Blossom, Goldenrod
  • 5 various wash tapes – I have no idea their brands
  • Dr Ph Martin’s Bombay India Ink: Orange
  • Golden’s Fluid Acrylic: Naphthol Red Medium
  • General’s Pencil 2B
  • M Graham & Co Heavy Body Acrylic Paint: Titanium White
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil – Alphabetic

  • Christy Tomlinson Designs Stamp – Shescript
  • Archival Ink Pad: Jet Black
  • Stabilo All Pencil: Black
  • Fineliner Applicator Standard Tip bottle with white acrylic paint

dsc07788Well that about raps it up for today! I am very happy with this spread, I hope you enjoyed it too! If you haven’t subscribed, please do so, so you don’t miss what’s to come!

If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments section! I will be happy to be of help! 🙂

Mixed Media with Chrissie B #2

Good evening!

I am very excited to announce that I have posted a new Mixed Media with Chrissie B video, this is actually video #2, to be exact!

SIDE NOTE: mama is tired!! I am having a BLAST putting out so many new videos, but man, is it a TON OF WORK!!! I am hoping this will get a tad easier, in the next coming weeks, more to come!

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled program!!

dsc07749As, I was saying, before I so rudely interrupted myself. I have a new Mixed Media video out, and this week I decided to go old school and do a full art journal spread! I thought that this would be a piece of cake, but in all honesty I have been doing 1 page, loose leaf, journal spreads for the past 6 months or so, and I found myself struggling more than usual to get something down on the spread! Plus, to start a spread from start to finish, is not easy on my poor brain right now! Mama is seriously busy, I have mentioned that haven’t I? 🙂

When I first started this spread out, I had a completely different direction that I was going to take this spread. The only thing that remained the same to my original idea was the sentiment! When I found this piece of gauze hidden in my tissue paper drawer, it just screamed to be used – so here it appears!! 🙂dsc07750

Here are a list of all of the supplies I used in this week’s project:

  • Golden’s Matte Medium
  • 1-1/2 inch utility brush
  • a piece of gauze
  • Ranger Heat Tool
  • Golden’s fluid acrylic: teal
  • Dr. Ph Martin’s Bombay India Ink: turquoise, grass green
  • Staz On Ink Pad: forest green
  • Crafter’s Workshop 12×12 stencils: Well Rounded, and I apologize, but I can’t find the name of the 2nd stencil. I will update this post with the name if I can find it!
  • Sentiment printed out on regular printer paper
  • Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue
  • Scissors
  • 1/4 inch utility brush
  • White tissue paper that has been stamped with various stamps, using black staz on ink
  • Ranger Craft Mat – used as a paint pallet
  • Faber Castelle Pitt Artist Pen Big Brush: Indanthrene Blue (247), Purple Violet (136)

Whew! That seems like a lot of supplies, but I am thinking that maybe is very normal for me! 😉

dsc07751On a more serious note: I chose this sentiment this week because I think that some time in the past 6 months this happened to me. I looked around at the life that I had created, and thought to myself, “How the hell did I get here?” It was like I had this plan for what I wanted to do, be, have, and experience, and then somewhere along the way I got sucked up in the rush of traffic of what is “normal”, “responsible”, and “expected”. When I finally really, truly looked around at this life that I had created, through all of my choices, and actions, I was shocked that I had ended up here. It was kind of like driving to work in the morning, and you let your mind start to wander, when you finally get to the parking lot at work, you do a double take and ask yourself, how did I get here??? That is what happened to me, and my life. It is not that my life is so bad, it is just that it is not what I had set out to create! That is freaking scary.dsc07767

So I am changing things up, some of those changes I do not have much control over, but even those changes that I didn’t choose has caused me to wake up and really look around at my life. So for that, I am so incredibly thankful!!

I keep saying to myself I want a happy ending! I want a happy ending!! I realize, that it is not too late to create that happy ending for myself, on purpose! And thankfully I have an AMAZING support system in place of AWESOME people who will help support me in creating this new life! I am not sure how all of these changes are going to come to fruition, but I need to remember that no matter how scary all of the coming changes are going to be, it is waaaaay scarier to wake up and realize that you have arrived at an entirely new decade of your life, and you have no idea how you created the life that you are living in, because you are too busy flying on autopilot!

“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much!” ~Jim Rohn

I know this video was really short and fast this week, I will work on that for future videos! In any case, I really hope you enjoyed this video! I know that I learned a lot about myself while creating it!

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know in the comment section! I am always happy to be of help!

Mixed Media Techniques #3

Good evening!

This week, for my Mixed Media Art Technique video, I had some fun showcasing 3 of my favorite quick and easy art journal background techniques. More specifically, 3 easy ways to take the fear out of getting started on a white art journal page! I find that some times when I am faced with a fresh new page, I can  overthink what to do first, and then end up getting frustrated, or worse, giving up and walking away. These simple techniques takes that fear out of getting started!

As promised here are the art supplies that I used this week:

  • DecoArt Crafter’s Acrylic Paints: Wild Green, Tutti Fruitti, Tropical Blue, and Buttercream
  • An old plastic credit card (a palette knife could be used as a substitute)
  • Dina Wakley Media 1 Inch Flat Brush
  • and a small square of hard plastic, that I had repurposed out of a piece of the packaging of something I had purchased (you could easily use any flat hard item to do this, or you could use a piece of overhead projector plastic, cut into a square)

I hope that these examples give you some inspiration to go and try doing some of your own quick and easy backgrounds!  The sky is the limit on what you can do over the top of these backgrounds, but I hope I can help get you started. I am sure that in one of my future videos I will be showing how I finish each one of these pages, so please stay tuned! If you haven’t done so already, I would recommend that you subscribe so that you don’t miss a thing! 🙂

Thanks so much for visiting, and here is to living a Beautiful Creative life!

Art Journal Thursday #24!

It is better late than never…

I am happy to announce that my Art Journal Thursday video has been posted out on YouTube!

The supplies I used this week were:

  • White gesso
  • Art Advantage Acrylic Paint: Permanent Green Light, Phthalo Turquoise, Cerulean Blue
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencils: Halves, and Spinners
  • Dylusions 5×8 Stencil: Circles Small
  • Black Stabilo Pencil
  • Finalize Bottle filled with white acrylic paint
  • Punchinella
  • M. Graham & Co Titanium White Acrylic Paint

DSC06872This week’s page is actually really simple, but I love the way that it turned out.

DSC06875I was really excited to get started on this week’s art journal spread because this was the week that I got to start in my crisp, clean, new art journal!

DSC06881My new art journal is a Strathmore 400 series, 8.5×11 watercolor paper journal, and I am just LOVING the size! It is so much more manageable than the art journal I just finished, which was a Strathmore 500 series 11×17, I think!

DSC06880

The pages of this journal aren’t quite as smooth as the last journal, but I think I will be able to enjoy myself so much more, now that I don’t have the pressure of trying to figure out to cover such a large spread! So YEAH FOR THAT!! 😉DSC06883

I am LOVING all of the textures that this background technique has created!DSC06889

I also really LOVE the colors that I have chosen for this page – ACTUALLY, it was my hubby who chose blue and green – his favorite colors!! Thank you, Sweetie! 😉DSC06897

I also am really enjoying adding art journaling to my spreads!! It has kind of become a game to see if I can figure out a new way to journal on my page each week! I really like the circular journaling though…might be my new fave! 🙂DSC06887

So, even though this page was really simple to do, and actually came together rather quickly, I am really very happy with how it turned out!  I think that this new journal is off to a great start!! I can’t wait to see what comes out next!!!DSC06894

What do you think? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!! 🙂

Also, if you have any ideas, or techniques that you might like to see me try in one of my future layouts, please let me know in the comment section and I will see what I can do to be accommodating! Also, I really do LOVE answering any questions you may have about art journaling, mixed-media, or anything you might have seen me do here! Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, and I will try and get back to you in a timely manner!!

Until next time!

Art Journal Thursday #22

Good morning!

I am very happy to announce that my Art Journal Thursday video #21 is up on YouTube!

The supplies I used this week were:

  • Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body Acrylic Paints: Tangerine, Magenta, Lime
  • Tim Holtz Distress Ink Re-inker: Peeled Paint
  • Alesa Baker Designs Wood Mounted Stamp: French Handwriting
  • Art Impressions Wood Mounted Rubber Stamp: Squiggly line (that’s what I am calling it)
  • Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint: White
  • Paper Towel that had mopped up various Dylusions sprays
  • Scissors
  • Uhu Glue Stick
  • Fineline Applicator filled with White Acrylic Paint
  • Black Pilot Multiball Pen – my new FAVE doodling pen!!!

DSC06820If you watched this week’s video, you already know that I really didn’t have any kind of plan when I went into this week’s art journal spread! In all honesty, I just knew that I had to get an art journal video done for this week, but I was so tired from a week of not really taking very good care of myself sleep-wise, compounded with losing another hour of sleep due to daylight savings time, I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to get this one done!

DSC06825I decided to help get me into the arting mood that I would listen to some loud happy music, and it worked! Before I knew what hit me, I had found my stride, and was once again a very VERY happy girl! 😉

DSC06827I had a lot of fun this week just putting down colors, doodling, and just really letting myself play! I find that when I revert back to my inner, kindergarten Chrissie, that I have a tendency to be really happy with my art journal pages!

DSC06836This week was no different!!! As soon as I released my inner me, I found myself having fun, and pulling from a pile that I haven’t really played with in a while – and that was my stash of used paper towels, which may not seem like something to be proud of, but trust me, I am!!! I just LOVE finding new ways to use treasures from my stash!!

DSC06837Anyway, I really hope you enjoyed watching this week’s video! I really hope that these weekly videos can, in some way, inspire you to try something new in your own art journals – that would be so AMAZING to me!!! 😉

DSC06842DSC06846What do you think of this week’s spread? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!! 🙂

Also, if you have any ideas, or techniques that you might like to see me try in one of my future layouts, please let me know in the comment section and I will see what I can do to be accommodating! Art Journal Thursday Video #21!

Good evening!

I am very happy to report that my 21st Art Journal Thursday video out on YouTube!

The art supplies I used this week were:

  • Tim Holtz Idea-ology Decorative Tissue Wrap: Postale
  • Uhu Glue Stick
  • 3×5 Gelli Plate
  • Blick Studio Acrylic Paints: Cadmium Orange Hue, Primary Red, Phthalo Green
  • Apple Barrel Acrylic Craft Paint: White
  • Brayer
  • Art Advantage Double Ended Stylus
  • 5 Miscellaneous Wood Mounted Rubber Stamps: one is from Great Impressions (3 concentric circles), one is from Inkadoo (Carte postale), one is from Delafield Stamp Company (XOXOXO), one is from Hero Arts (Painted Circle), and I am not sure where the last one is from, but it is the one with small doily design
  • Ranger’s Black Archival Ink Pad
  • Black Stabilo All Pencil
  • Uni-Ball Signo White Broad Pen
  • Scissors
  • Scarlet Lime Black Doodling Pen

DSC06797When I started this week’s layout, I was determined to try something that I had felt failed miserably last week; and that was creating a background using my 3×5 Gelli Plate.

DSC06801I felt like the reason this didn’t work for me last week was the fact that I didn’t limit myself to a selection of a handful of colors. That background ended up being so busy that there was no way that anything could stood out on its own in the foreground. This time I made sure to limit my colors to just three, not counting white!

DSC06808As I was laying my color down with my Gelli Plate, I started seeing this layout as kind of a paper quilt, which made me start thinking about my mama, and my grandmother, and all of the strong women who came before me. It made me really happy to reconnect with those memories, and to understand just how blessed I am that I come from such a long line of really strong, and AMAZING women!

DSC06805Thinking on the women of family, also made me think of a favorite song from my childhood, that has a way of popping up in my life at exactly the right moments. This song is called “This Little Light of Mine”. It has been showing up a LOT in my life over the past year, and it again this week. It reminds me that I need to shine my light, which is where my my sentiment came from this week. You may be the only light in the world someone sees today, make sure you shine bright!

DSC06812I think this background turned out much better than my attempt last week, hands down! This week’s attempt has inspired me to try this again, but this time on an art canvas! I am thinking that this might be a really cool background for a new piece of artwork that I can hang in my new office at work!

DSC06815

What do you think? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this week’s art spread!! 🙂

Also, if you have any ideas, or techniques that you might like to see me try in one of my future layouts, please let me know in the comment section and I will see what I can do to be accommodating! Art Journal Thursday #20!

I realize this is better late than never, but I am happy to report that my Art Journal Thursday #20 has been posted out on YouTube!

The art supplies I used this week were:

  • 3X5 Gelli Plate
  • Brayer
  • Blick Studio Acrylic Paints: Titanium White, Phthalo Green, Cadmium Orange Hue, Green Light Permanent, Primary Red, Primary Blue
  • Dina Wakley Stencils: Mod, Organic Shapes, Halves
  • Dylusions Stencils: Circles Large, Shattered Large, Triangles Large
  • Huey’s Mask Stencil: Bubbles
  • Liquitex White Gesso
  • Dylusions Spray Inks: White Linen, Vibrant Turquoise, Calypso Teal, London Blue, Fresh Lime, Cut Grass
  • Apple Barrel Acrylic Craft Paint: White
  • Uhu Glue Stick
  • Black Stabilo Pencil
  • Blue Stabilo Pencil
  • Ranger’s Archival Black Ink Pad

DSC06772If you watched the video this week, you might notice that I was really struggling to get this spread to a point that I was happy with!

DSC06777I also, generally, frown on completely whiting a page out and starting over…I usually am a firm believer that every spread is salvageable in some way or another! So, when I finally hit day three, try three, and I was still feeling really stuck, I knew that whiting the spread out was going to have to be my solution this week!

DSC06780Although I felt the need to completely white out my backgrounds and start over, I really had fun just playing with my Gelli Plate and playing some with a few new stencils!

DSC06789My final attempt at this spread, which is the one that I was finally happy with was so much fun to create. I think the reason that I felt I was finally successful was that I finally got out of my own head, and started to really just go with the flow! I think I was having so much trouble because I was overthinking what I was trying to do…I have a tendency to do that at times! 😉

DSC06782I also think that where the genius of this spread shows up is in some of the close up photographs! I can say genius, right??? Yeah! I can do that! I just LOVE all the yummily-scrumptious color combinations that unexpectantly showed up!

DSC06793I also really LOVE the very textured background that was created by all of the layers that I had inadvertently created with all of my ugly background tries! It has resulted in a very tactile friendly kind of spread, which I surprisingly LOVE!

DSC06786See what I mean??? This green and blue are just AMAZING together!! I love the pop that it creates!

DSC06795And somehow, I ended up with a few speckles of a deep burgundy, red – I am not sure how that happened, but I am really LOVING that too!! 😉 So, all-in-all, I think that after more than a few heartbreaking tries, this page turned into something that I can be very happy about! 😉

What do you think? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this week’s art spread!! 🙂

Also, if you have any ideas, or techniques that you might like to see me try in one of my future layouts, please let me know in the comment section and I will see what I can do to be accommodating!
