The Chunky Dunker’s Club, Week 7

Good evening!

Welcome to week 7, of the Chunky Dunker’s Club!! Where does all of the time seem to go??

Every week I post a new Chunky Dunker’s article ever Wednesday evening, and you have the opportunity to comment, and cheer each other as you each go through your journey to get fit and healthy!!! We will discuss hints, tips, and ideas on losing weight, staying motivated, and achieving your fitness goals, whether that is to lose 5 pounds, to do 10 sit-ups, or just incorporate some healthy habits into your daily life!!

Tonight’s topic: Emotional Eating!

I am not sure about you, but I sure am guilty for eating, not because I am hungry, but because I am needing something emotionally. For example, I got home from a not so pleasant day at work not to long ago, and went right to the cupboards and ate two cookies. With nary a thought about, why I was eating those cookies. Was I hungry? What was I really needing? Were those cookies going to satisfy whatever those needs were?? Uhm…no, no, and no!!

What I am learning, as I go through this get fit journey with you, is that sometimes to have any kind of success, you first have to figure out why you do what it is that you are doing. It is all about pain and pleasure.

I believe there are two kinds of forces in this world that sway you to make a decision either one way or the other. Pain and Pleasure. What pain are you trying to avoid, and what pleasure are you trying to gain? Think about it, I ate the cookies because I was trying to avoid the pain of having to deal with my day, and to gain the pleasure of tasting some really yummy cookies.

How else do we use pain and pleasure in our get fit choices?

I am not going to get up to exercise because I want to avoid the pain of having to get out of bed early, and gain the pleasure of sleeping for an extra hour. I am convinced that this pain/pleasure principal applies to EVERY CHOICE WE MAKE!!!

HOMEWORK: Write down 5 choices you make every day, and what pain you are trying to avoid, and what pleasure you are trying to gain from each choice. Look at your answers, if you were to change you pain/pleasure that you associate with these choices would your physical life improve.

Underneath each choice, write what the reality of what you are doing here – this might be eye-opening for you.

For me, my homework would look something like:

Choice #1: I let Jason make my breakfast, snack, lunch and dinners, and whatever he makes I’ll eat
Pain I Am Avoiding: Having to take time out of my busy day to plan and do the work for this myself
Pleasure I am Gaining: It feels so good to have someone do all of this for me. I feel spoiled!! 😉
Reality: I don’t think it is wrong to have Jason help me in this way, but ultimately I have to be the one to be responsible for what I put into my mouth. I need to speak up and let him know what I want in my lunch box, so he doesn’t always have to guess, or over pack my lunch box.

Choice #2: I choose not to take time out of my work day and go exercise like most of my co-workers.
Pain I Am Avoiding: I am avoiding looking silly, sweating, or getting sore
Pleasure I am Gaining: I think that I can spend that hour a day doing more work at my desk
Reality: I think the reality is that the longer I sit at my desk, the slower my metabolism is going to get, the more weight I am going to gain and in 10 years, when I have all sorts of weight related sicknesses, I am going to look back and say, “why I didn’t I do something about my health when I could have?”.

Choice #3: Watching more than an hour of television every evening
Pain I Am Avoiding: Having to deal with chores that need to be done, or having to deal with negative emotions the might have emerged from my day
Pleasure I am Gaining: I get to zone out, and just stop thinking for myself
Reality: I spend more time watching other people “Live” than I actually do living myself. These people on television are not my friends, they don’t know who I am, they are not even real! Sheesh!

Choice #4: I choose not to get out of the house of the evening and go walking, or swimming with Jason
Pain I Am Avoiding: It feels like too much work
Pleasure I am Gaining: I make excuses for myself to not have to go out, “I have earned” being a lazy hermit somehow. So it is almost a sense of entitlement, plus I just LOVE being home.
Reality: I am really missing a great opportunity to not only increase my physical fitness, but to also spend some quality time with Jason. Realizing that makes me sad.

Choice #5: Not getting to bed early enough that I get at least 8 hours of sleep every night
Pain I Am Avoiding: I have this weird feeling that if I go to bed early then I will either “miss something”, or I will just have to wake up sooner to go back to work again
Pleasure I am Gaining: Uhmmm…getting to do one last chore, or cross off one last thing off of my to-do list
Reality: Who am I kidding?? This just makes me more tired, and irritable the next day, and it gets progressively worse until I get myself some sleep – that is not helping anyone!!!

What would your choices look like? Let me know in the comments above!

Have a FABULOUS evening!! 😉

I would like to point out that there where more than 2 cookies available and she ONLY had 2. She used to get three or four.

    1. christinaville Post author

That is so true, the old me would have REALLY just helped herself to that box of cookies!!! 😉 Thank you, Baby, for pointing that out!!! 😉

  2. Alice

i don’t like this subject. it is to close to home. that is my biggest problem i eat when i am depressed

  3. Jennifer

I make a lot of good choices, but if I break it down for all basics then most are good only halfway. The other half suck.

      1. Jennifer

Like I dont eat junk food, chips, or sweats and I dont drink soda, but… I still eat fried food from the store and eat pizza….not good.

      2. christinaville Post author

I still think you are doing great!!! You are waaay ahead of where I am at! It just takes time for your body to catch up to the changes you are making!!!

    1. Alexa Moody

Start eliminating the fried foods one at a time Jen. If you are having fried foods more than once a day…eliminate it once day.

  4. Alice

i am trying to do better. i am trying to get better at by doing other things then eat
i am making another blanket but this time it is going to be a big one

    1. christinaville Post author

That is cool! at least it will help with mindless snacking – if your hands are busy!!!! 😉 Have you ever tried walk to the park across the street and back?

    1. christinaville Post author

Yes, exactly! Like alternatives!! For example, I almost sent Jason out to get cold stone, and he suggested he dice up a banana and some fresh strawberries – topped with whipped cream, it TOTALLY hit the spot!!! Great Job, Sweetie!!! 😉

      1. Alexa Moody

I have a great option for you!
Take a cup soy milk or whatever milk and a cup of ice, 2 tbsps or to your liking cocoa powder and tb of peanut butter. And hit blend in the blender til it’s a smoothie.

      1. Alexa Moody

How far are you getting in the Full Heart book? Start your plates off with just the serving size of all the foods. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly. When you actually feel your stomach getting full…then you just stop.

I am only still at chapter 5, but I have really been paying attention to my body and trying to listen to what it is needing, which has really helped with portion control. I have been doing my morning pages, and it is taking so much time every morning to do those, that I really haven’t had time for reading. but the morning pages are so beneficial that I don’t want to stop! I am in LOVE LOVE LOVE with this process.

Jason has even been getting up earlier, and we are just both so much happier! I promise I will pick up the Full Heart book again this evening, and I will keep going with it!!

          How about you???

      2. Alexa Moody

Good to hear. I am not busting your bum about it…just was curious because it talks about listening to your body.
I am so proud of your steps for self-realization.

This usually happens when I let too much time lapse between meals!! Which is why I try to keep almonds and some fruit in my purse at all times!!

      1. Alexa Moody

I have been following for the most part the Blood Type Diet. One of the nuts that is highly beneficial for my blood type is pumpkin seeds. I found them in the bulk section at Sprout’s my health food store.
Now I have the almonds…but I find myself missing the pumpkin seeds.

      2. Alexa Moody

The book is called Eat Right For Your Type (4 Blood Types, 4 Diets) by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo with Catherine Whitney. It tells you what is highly beneficial for you, what is neutral and what to avoid!

      3. Alexa Moody

Well that is part of my weight loss. There are some things I will not eliminate… tomatoes for sure! I adore tomatoes. But Camille’s co-worker has lost a ton of weight following it to the tee and still doing it today.

I think for myself, I have been really working hard on getting more movement into my days!! Especially with my belly dancing class, it kind of re-energized me to kick my fitness regime in gear! I am nowhere perfect, but much better than I was!!

  6. Jason

I am doing much better. My back is almost 100% again and I am ready to kick into summer gear. Time to break out the mower and stuff and start knockin on doors.

      1. christinaville Post author

Yes, Jason gets fit rather quickly once he starts his Summer work back up again!! I wish I could lose it that fast, but MAN I know he works hard to have to have his weight fall off of him like he does!!!

      1. Alice

      1. Jennifer

    1. christinaville Post author

      1. christinaville Post author

Jennifer and Trina are listening to Faye snore over my speaker phone, and they are giggling like crazy!!! I love my girls!!! and my puppies too!!! 😉

  9. Trina

I had three sodas this week, not what I wanted, but I did it anyway. I also have had a lot of fruit this week. I have been walking to many different places.

    1. Alexa Moody

I actually ate one of the pretzels yesterday watching Your Highness and it didn’t do it for me anymore. So I won’t be buying those any longer.

    2. Alexa Moody

Very proud of you Jen and Trina for what you continue to do for your health! Even if they are baby steps….at least it’s going forward!

  10. Alexa Moody

Every day I am saying mantras to change my subconscious mind….my self critic.
*I am so happy and grateful that all is well in my life.
*I am in harmony with my body.
*I am in harmony with my health.
*I am in harmony…. you name your challenge, situation or person causing you some pain, grief or anxiety. I am in harmony with my home. Or my children or my finances.
I also state who I am …I acknowledge me… by saying “I AM Alexa Moody”. The reason behind this is to put into motion my real self.

    1. christinaville Post author

Those are all FABULOUS!! Thank you, sis!! I am going to have to start using mantras myself!!!

It is past my bedtime, so I am going to sign off for the night!!!
      I love you, Sis!!! G’night!!! 😉
